Process of selection for Medical Officers Grade (General Duty – Central Health Service) | Assistant Divisional Medical Officer (Railways) | General Duty Medical Officer (NDMC) | General Duty Medical Officer Grade-II (MCD)
Selection is based on two stages: Written Examination (500 Marks) + Personality Test/Interview (100 Marks) = Total 600 Marks.
Written Examination (Part-I) – 500 Marks:
Paper-I (Code No. 1): General Medicine and Paediatrics – 250 Marks | 120 Questions (96 from General Medicine + 24 from Paediatrics) | Duration: 2 hours
Paper-II (Code No. 2): Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Preventive & Social Medicine – 250 Marks | 120 Questions (40 from each part) | Duration: 2 hours
Both papers are completely Objective Type (Multiple Choice Answers). Question papers are in English only.
Negative Marking: 1/3rd (0.33) of marks assigned to that question will be deducted for each wrong answer. No penalty for unanswered questions.
Personality Test/Interview (Part-II) – 100 Marks: Candidates qualifying the written examination will be called for Interview/Personality Test conducted by the Commission to assess General Knowledge, academic ability, intellectual curiosity, balance of judgment, integrity of character, initiative and leadership.
Tie-Breaking Principle:
If Final Marks are equal: candidate securing more marks in Written Total ranked higher.
If still equal: senior in age ranked higher.
If Date of Birth also same: candidate whose date of completion of Internship is earlier ranked higher.
If tie persists: resolved at the discretion of the Commission.
The Commission has discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or both papers of the examination.
Successful candidates will be considered for appointment on the basis of order of merit and preferences expressed for various posts.
Allotment of Centres is on “first-apply-first-allot” basis. PwBD candidates can opt for their desired centre regardless of ceiling.
Face authentication is mandatory for all candidates at the examination venue.
Candidates must reach the examination venue at least 30 minutes prior to commencement of each session. No late entry will be allowed.

Candidates must apply online only at: https://upsconline.nic.in
Complete the following four modules on the portal:
Account Creation
Universal Registration (URN Profile) – register once in lifetime
Common Application Form (CAF)
Examination Specific Module (including fee payment and centre selection)
Upload: scanned photograph (.jpg, 20 KB to 200 KB), scanned signature (.jpg, 20 KB to 100 KB), and a live photograph during CAF filling.
Signature must be signed three times (one below the other) on plain white paper in black ink.
Keep one Photo ID (Aadhaar Card / Voter Card / PAN Card / Passport / Driving Licence / Any other State/Central Govt. issued Photo ID) for all future references.
Pay the prescribed fee of Rs. 200/- online through Net Banking / Visa / Master / RuPay / Credit / Debit Card / UPI (not applicable for exempted candidates).
Application window: 11.03.2026 to 31.03.2026 (06:00 PM).
Candidates are strongly advised to apply well in advance to secure their preferred examination centre (first-apply-first-allot basis).
Candidates in Government service must submit an undertaking to their Head of Office/Department and mention it in the application.
Do not submit multiple applications. Multiple applications by the same candidate will be rejected.
Hard copy of the application form is NOT required to be submitted to the Commission.
Candidates qualified for Personality Test must mandatorily login to the portal within 15 days of result declaration of written examination to update details and upload proof of passing the qualifying examination.
